Dr. Jay-Rayon worked on a team of professors at Montclair State University over many years to develop two new programs: our post-BA certificate in French Translation and our MA Concentration in French Translation. Dr Jay-Rayon was integral to this work from the very beginning, and we could never have brought these programs to fruition without her.
In addition, as a professor of French language and translation studies in our department, she helped to completely reinvigorate our curriculum on both the undergraduate and the graduate level. Her knowledge of current trends in technology, her contacts in the professional translation world, and her collaborations with outside organizations such as the International Rescue Committee are but a few examples. As a Community Engaged Teaching and Learning Fellow on our campus, she taught our introductory undergraduate Translation course as an experiential partnership with the IRC. Students have had the unbelievable opportunity to translate cultural orientation materials for newly-arrived Congolese refugees, and several have since continued working as interpreters for the agency.
She also formed an exciting collaboration with the University of Maryland, Colony in Crisis, in which faculty and students worked to translate original eighteenth-century historical documents about the Haitian Revolution from French into Haitian Creole. This was one of the first and most original endeavors undertaken by the MSU Digital Humanities Center.
She also launched our student exchange program with our partner institution, Université Laval in Québec. Finally, this past June, Dr Jay-Rayon organized an international conference on translation pedagogy. Professional translators and translation educators from around the world (Québec, Poland, Portugal, Benin, Nigeria) and across the United States (New York University, Rutgers, the University of Massachusetts, Carnegie Mellon, and Brown University, among others) gathered to share ideas on program development, curriculum design, and best practices for collaborations with industry and government.
Dr Jay-Rayon completed all of this program and curriculum development work in addition to teaching four language and translation courses per semester, in both French and German. The students adored her. She is an indefatigable powerhouse, whose knowledge, expertise, and contacts would be vital to any academic organization seeking to develop their translation pedagogy. « Mrs. Jay-Rayon Ibrahim Aibo taught an all-online English to French translation core course entitled “Translation for Human Resources” in the summer of 2013 and spring of 2015 for the translation certificate program of New York University’s School of Professional Studies (NYU SPS).
During my tenure as translation studies coordinator at NYU SPS, I often called students to get their candid opinion about the delivery of a given course. I believed that these phone calls were a means to obtain more honest feedback about the instruction they had received because I felt that the anonymity of online course evaluations skewed student commentary to the extremes—both positive and negative.
My impromptu interviews of Laurence’s students confirmed what I believed about her all along: she is an excellent instructor with a strong online presence who built a genuine community in the virtual classroom. Aside from her excellent teaching skills that allied deep knowledge of her subject matter and pedagogical rigor, both her students and I found her very approachable, respectful, and professional.
